Traditionally, we study a book for the Advent season as we prepare for Christmas. The book we’ve selected this year focuses on the Advent season more than most. Advent means ‘arrival’ or ‘coming.’ Two weeks of the Bible readings for the four weeks of Advent focus on John the Baptist’s message of preparing for the Messiah to come to us. Jesus himself said John came to prepare the way for him, and all four gospels give special place to John’s message to prepare our hearts and lives for the Christ.

Unlike other studies that have focused on the Christmas story, this one truly adopts the gospel lens of John’s ministry of preparation. Adam Hamilton is one of the most widely-read authors of Advent and Lenten book studies. He is readable to those just looking for practical, devotional development in their faith and those seeking more in-depth Biblical insights. His videos help present the essential message of each week’s lesson so that reading the book provides more background. So reading the book is optional and is not necessary to come and join discussions.

Books are available from major retailers in several formats, including e-books. Used books can also be found online for far less. Hardback copies are available in the narthex/lobby for a suggested donation of $15.

This is a great book to help all of us prepare for a more meaningful Christmas. Even if you don’t come to any of the discussion sessions, consider reading the book yourself or with your family as we journey to the birth of the Christ child among us. Discussion sessions meet each Monday at 9:30 am and Wednesday at 6:30 pm (Zoom option available on Wednesday sessions) throughout December. The plans for the discussions are as follows:

Week 1 Dec 4/6:      Covering chapters 1 & 2 while focusing on chapter 2.

Week 2 Dec 11/13:   Chapter 3

Week 4 Dec 18/20:  Chapter 4
